Islamabad: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) of Pakistan has arrested three individuals accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create and circulate fake images and videos of United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on social media.
According to FIA officials, an initial investigation identified 20 social media accounts involved in disseminating the fake content. Following this discovery, the FIA expanded its inquiry and formed a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe the matter further.
The JIT, led by Additional Director Chaudhry Sarfraz, includes deputy directors stationed in Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, and Lahore. The investigation was initiated based on a "source report" that flagged the activity, linking the fake videos and images directly to the accounts managed by the arrested individuals.
Authorities revealed that since January 7, 2025, multiple social media users had shared alleged videos of a meeting between CM Maryam Nawaz and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. However, several of these videos were found to be AI-generated fabrications.
The FIA is continuing its investigation to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in this digital forgery.
